Syrian Refugees in Turkey: Temporary Guests or Permanent Residents?

Club Alpbach Turkey will organise a symposium and a photo exhibition called “Syrian Refugees in Turkey: Temporary Guests or Permanent Residents?” in partnership with Austrian Culture Office on 14 April 2016 at the Consulate General of Austria in Yenikoy, Istanbul. The Symposium will take place at 14.00-17.00 pm and the speakers will be Mag. Franz Wolf (Austrian Integration Fund Manager), Dr. Senay Ozden (Koç University), Dr. Murat Erdogan (Hacettepe University) and Buket Uzuner (Author). “Women and Migration” Seminar was held at Gedik University

One of the founding members of Club Alpbach Turkey, Dr. Selin Akyüz was the speaker of the Seminar “Women and Migration” organised by the Asian Studies Implementation and Research Centre of Gedik University. Dr. Selin Akyüz, who is an academician at the Advanced Research Centre of Bilkent University, stated that the biggest mistake that we made while examining the causes of migration, its different processes, consequences and effects was to create stereotypes. She talked about how imposed or forced migration effected men and women in different degrees and ways. She laid down the legal framework regarding the legal status of refugees in Turkey, then shared her experiences and women stories that she witnessed during her field work in Gaziantep.

Eastern Express Training Course

Feyza Basar, representing Club Alpbach Turkey, participated in a Training Course “Eastern Express” on 7-12 February 2016 in Tbilisi, Georgia.  Eastern Express is a training course for potential partners of Youth Exchanges in frame of Erasmus+ Youth Programme. This event focuses on development of cooperation between Programme Countries, Eastern Partnership countries and Russian Federation.

During the training, we explored what makes a Youth Exchange project successful, what is good partnership, how the project should be managed, what should the active participants of young people be like and also what support measures we can use. Using this knowledge, we drafted a Youth Exchange project “Let’s do it together” in partnership with Azerbaijani, Ukrainian and Latvian organisations about the integration of refugees…


Club Alpbach Turkey organised a Photo Exhibition and Literature Day as part the cultural programme of European Forum Alpbach in Austria this year. The exhibition was comprised of 15 internationally renowned and most translated Turkish authors. The exhibition called "15" was created exclusively for the Forum and exhibited for the first time in Alpbach from 20 to 29 August 2012 at Hauptschule. The names of the authors were selected in accordance with the data obtained from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and their portrait photographs were taken by Muhsin Akgun, who was the editor of photography in the lifestyle and book review supplements of Radikal Newspaper and currently the official photographer of Istanbul Culture and Art Foundation (IKSV). Commerce on 16 April 2010. The key note speeches of the Conference were made by Helené Flautre, who is the Co-Chair of the Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, and by the Turkish State Minister for EU Affairs and the Chief Negotiator, Egemen Bagis. Ms. Flautré emphasised that Europe should be saved from its visa paranoid whereas Mr. Bagis stated that the sincerity of Europe shall be judged upon her reaction to the precautionarymeasures taken by Turkey on visa issues.
